Why: Initially
it may be difficult to understand why create the Hamiltons.org sites when all of
commercial sites available like Facebook and Twitter offer similar
functionality. Simply, other available sites are designed to share information
with friends, family and anyone else you allow access. These commercial sites
are designed for the “here and now” of your life. What if you want to look
back at your ancestor’s lives, or review your past years from now, where do
you go? The information you share today is not guaranteed to be available for
you, your children, grandchildren and so on. Not to mention, with identity
theft, people need to be careful with sharing personal information, information
that you would share with family but, not want to share with others. The
Hamiltons.org infrastructure can be called a Historical Archive of our branch of
the Hamilton
Family.
What
kind of information: Have
you ever listened to family stories at family get-togethers? What happens to all
of those stories in the future, are they still told, accurately or even
remembered? As I try to remember family get-togethers I remember bits and pieces
of stories which today are foggy and not complete. How
about looking at family photos? We all have our own collection of pictures and
videos on various formats. How often do you look at old pictures? How will you
share or duplicate those pictures to share with others in your family. With
technology today, you can post and share this information, knowing it will be
there for many years to come. How
about that Uncle that came to your house when you were young and you haven’t
seen for years? Will you know who he actually was when you grow old? Was he
related or a close friend your parents called Uncle? Will your children know
their Great Grand Parents story? Having a Family album is a key way to continue
tracking family but, to use a traditional family album requires a lot of work to
keep up to date. As I have noticed each branch of the family will have their own
album which does not include information from other branches of the family.
Utilizing the internet technology, a family album can be widely used and
maintained without the trouble of making multiple copies and distribution.
